Bill of lading: the document that is the cargo

What the B/L proves, why a wrong consignee name can freeze a container in port, and how to catch it before the ship sails.

A bill of lading does three jobs at once: the carrier's receipt for the goods, the contract of carriage, and the document of title. Whoever holds an original can claim the container. That is why a wrong name on it is not a typo. It is a legal problem at a port you cannot visit.

The three jobs

Receipt: what the carrier says it loaded, with the marks and count. Contract: the terms of carriage. Title: the paper that stands in for the goods while they are at sea. A bank under an LC needs the receipt and the title to match its letter exactly.

The LC cycle turns on it: you ship, the carrier issues the B/L, you hand it to your bank, the buyer pays and releases it, and only the holder can take delivery at the far port. Delays anywhere ripple straight into demurrage.

What goes wrong, in order

Consignee and notify names, the goods description against the invoice, the container and seal numbers, then the shipped-on-board date. Each one is a matching exercise against the LC and the invoice, and each one is checked by a bank clerk who does not know your product.

A telex release or a sea waybill solves the original-courier problem when the buyer is trusted and the LC does not require originals. It does not solve an LC requirement. Read the letter first, then choose the form.

The check that saves a week

The draft B/L comes days before the ship sails. Check it against the LC clause by clause the day it arrives, because after departure a correction means a new original, a courier and the buyer's patience.

Where Ara helps

Give Ara the LC and the draft B/L and ask for the mismatches. It reads both sides and lists what differs, in the order the bank will look at them. The comparison stays on your PC.

Turn the guide into your next shipment's documents.

Ara runs on your own PC and drafts the export documents with you: it reads the LC terms, fills the checklist and keeps every version. You stay the one who signs.
